Inherited from Prakrit 𑀥𑀽𑀆 (dhūā), from Sanskrit दुहितृ (duhitṛ), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰúgʰHtā, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰugh₂tḗr, possibly from *dʰewgʰ- + *-tḗr. Compare Old Gujarati धूय (dhūya, “daughter”, nominative singular feminine), Old Marathi 𑘠𑘳𑘪𑘰 (dhuvā).
