    From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dúźʰHtā, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰuǰʰHtā, from an earlier *dʰúgʰHtā (daughter), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰugh₂tḗr (daughter). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬎𐬔𐬆𐬛𐬀𐬭 (dugədar), Persian دختر (doxtar), Ancient Greek θυγάτηρ (thugátēr), English daughter.
