Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀳𑀺𑀁𑀕𑀼 (hiṃgu), from Sanskrit हिङ्गु (hiṅgu), originally a borrowing from Proto-Iranian *Hángwr̥ (extract, resin). Compare Assamese হিং (hiṅ), Odia ହିଙ୍ଗୁ (hiṅgu), ହଂଗ୍ (haṅg), as well as Hindi हींग (hīṅg), Nepali हिङ (hiṅ), Lepcha ᰝᰬᰵ (heng, ginger), and also Iranian Persian آنغوزه (ânğuze, Ferula species).
