Inherited from Sanskrit हायि (hāyi), an onomatopoeic expression (compare হা (ha)). Cognate with Odia ହାୟ୍ (hāy)‌, Hindi हाय (hāy)‌, Punjabi ਹਾਏ (hāē), Gujarati હાય (hāya), Marathi हाय (hāy).
