[edit]Inherited from Old Bengali *সাঁঅতাল (sā̃atāla), from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀲𑀸𑀅𑀁𑀢𑀸𑀮 (*sāaṃtāla), from earlier Prakrit *𑀲𑀸𑀫𑀁𑀢𑀯𑀸𑀮 (*sāmaṃtavāla), from Sanskrit সামন্তপাল (sāmantapāla, “border-tribe”), from সামন্ত (sāmanta, “bordering; neighbour”) + পাল (pāla, “protector, keeper”); the first element is from সমন্ত (samanta, “adjoining, bordering”), from সম্- (sam-, “along with”) + অন্ত (anta, “border, boundary”).
