Etymology

Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀫𑁂𑀘𑁆𑀙 (meccha), most likely from Sanskrit म्लेच्छ (mleccha, “non-Aryan, foreigner, barbarian”), potentially from an earlier *mlaikṣa (due to Pali milakkha containing the cluster -kkh-, which always shares a common origin with -cch- in an earlier -kṣ-), probably ultimately from an old substrate language. Doublet of ম্লেচ্ছ (mleccho).
