Borrowed from Classical Persian مگر (magar, but, unless, perhaps), from Middle Persian 𐭠𐭫 𐭧𐭲 (ʾl ḥt /⁠ma agar⁠/, perhaps; lest (lit. not if)). Compare Hindustani مگر / मगर (magar).
