Etymology

From Sanskrit भृति (bhṛti, “support”) or भृतिका (bhṛtikā), from the root भृ (bhṛ), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰar-, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰer-. Compare Early Assamese ভৰি (bhori).

ভড়ি (bhaṛi)

1. the portion of the body from the loins downward, the human leg
   • c. 17th-18th c., Viṣṇu-Pāl, Manasāmaṅgala:

     হাথ ভড়ি কাটিঞা তোর।

     hath bhoṛi kaṭĩa tōr.

     Cutting off your arms and legs.

   • c. 17th-18th c., Viṣṇu-Pāl, Manasāmaṅgala:

     হাথে ভড়্যে বান্ধে আগম জলে ফেলে দে।

     hāthe bhaṛye bāndhe āgama jale phele de.

     Tying his hands and feet throw him down into the fathomless water.
