[edit]Etymology
[edit]Learned borrowing from Sanskrit वर्धमान (vardhamāna, “increasing, growing, prospering”), a compound of वर्ध (vardha, “increase, growth, prosperity”) + -मान (-māna, possessive suffix), with the first element from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwardʰás, from a possible Proto-Indo-European *Hwerdʰ-ós. Supposedly, it was named such after being visited by Mahavira, whose title was Vardhamāna.
