Inherited from Early Assamese নিশাস (niśaso), from Sanskrit নিঃশ্ৱাস (niḥśvāsa), from Sanskrit শ্বাস (śvāsa), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱʷes- (to pant, puff, sigh). Cognate with Rohingya niác. Doublet of নিশ্বাস (nissax).
