Etymology

Compound of ন (no, “new”) +‎ দিয়া (diẏa, “island”), such named because the town was formerly an island on the Bhagirathi river that formed in medieval times. The name was later Sanskritised as নবদ্বীপ (noboddip), the more common name for the city now.
