Compound of দিনাজ (dinaj) +‎ পুর (pur), from Sanskrit दिनराज (dinarāja, sun, literally day-king), a compound of दिन (dina, day) + राज (rāja, king), and पुर (pura, city). The city is named in honor of the Dinaj rulers.
