Etymology

Borrowed from Portuguese tanque, from Gujarati ટાંકી (ṭā̃kī, cistern, underground water reservour), from Prakrit *𑀝𑀁𑀓𑀺𑀅 (*ṭaṃkia), from Sanskrit *टङ्किक (ṭaṅkika), from *टङ्क (ṭaṅka, artificial water store) +‎ -इक (-ika), from a non-Aryan substrate language. The variant is influenced by English tank, a cognate.
