Inherited from Prakrit 𑀓𑀫𑁆𑀫𑀸𑀯𑁂𑀇 (kammāvei), from Sanskrit *कर्मापयति (karmāpayati, to cause to work), from कर्म (karma, work) +‎ -प्- (-p-, vowel-succeeding causative infix) +‎ -अयति (-ayati, causative suffix). Cognate with Odia କମାଇବା (kamāibā), Gujarati કમાવું (kamāvũ), કમાવવું (kamāvvũ), Hindi कमाना (kamānā), Sindhi ڪَمَائِڻُ / कमाइणु (kamāiṇu), Punjabi ਕਮਾਉਣਾ (kamāuṇā), Nepali कमाउनु (kamāunu), Marathi कमावणे (kamāvṇe).
