Borrowed from Classical Persian آزاد (āzād), from Middle Persian ʾcʾt' (/⁠āzād⁠/, noble; free), from Old Persian *𐎠𐏀𐎠𐎫 (*a-z-a-t /⁠āzāta-⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *āzāta-. Compare Hindustani آزاد (āzād) / आज़ाद (āzād).
