Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰáwtā (“priest”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéw-tōr (“pourer”), from *ǵʰew- (“to pour”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬊𐬙𐬀𐬭 (zaotar) and English god.
