Inherited from Sanskrit होड (hoḍa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-). Cognate with Konkani होडी (hoḍī) / hoddi, Gujarati હોડી (hoḍī), Marathi होडी (hoḍī), Dhivehi އޮޑި (oḍi).

     unhẽ praśāsan kī or se khāne-pīne kī sāmagrī tathā māsik bhattā bhī miltā hai, ḍeniyal ne batāyā aur samudra kī or iśārā kiyā, “vo dekhie apnī hoṛī par […] aṇḍamānī puruṣ machliyõ kī talāś mẽ.”
