Hindi
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀳𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚 (*hijja) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-) + -𑀓- (-ka-), whence हीज (hīj, “defective; cowardly”).
Some have suggested a formation from Arabic ه ج ر (h-j-r) but this derivation is implausible due to the widespread cognates of this term.
Cognate with Punjabi ਹਿਜੜਾ (hijṛā) / ہجڑا (hijṛā), Gujarati હીજડો (hījḍo), Marathi हिजडा (hij̈ḍā), Bengali হিজড়া (hijoṛa), Odia ହିଜଡ଼ (hijaṛa), Sinhalese [script needed] (hījiṛo).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]हिजड़ा • (hijṛā) m (Urdu spelling ہجڑا)
Declension
