Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰeys- (“fright”), an extension of *ǵʰey- (“wound, thrust”). See also हेष् (heṣ, “to be strong”).
Compare the semantic development of English thrust and threat, both from Proto-Indo-European *trewd- (“to push, thrust”).
