From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰeys- (fright), an extension of *ǵʰey- (wound, thrust). See also हेष् (heṣ, to be strong).

Compare the semantic development of English thrust and threat, both from Proto-Indo-European *trewd- (to push, thrust).
