Inherited from Prakrit हंस (haṃsa, “goose”), from Sanskrit हंस (haṃsa, “goose, swan”). Doublet of हंस (hans). Cognate to Punjabi ਹੰਸ (hans), Bengali হাঁস (hãs), and Burmese ဟင်္သာ (hangsa), and more distantly with Old English gōs (whence English goose) and Lithuanian žąsìs.
