Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Haryanvi हरियाणा (hariyāṇā), from Apabhramsa हरियाण (hariyāṇa) found in the works of the 1000s CE writer Vibudh Shridhar. Further, probably from a metathesis of Prakrit *𑀅𑀳𑀺𑀭𑀸𑀬𑀡 (*ahirāyaṇa), from 𑀅𑀳𑀺𑀭 (ahira), a variant of Prakrit 𑀆𑀳𑀻𑀭 (āhīra), from Sanskrit आभीर (ābhīra) (the name of a community mentioned in the Mahabharata that inhabited the area of present-day Haryana in ancient times), suffixed with 𑀅𑀬𑀦 ~ 𑀅𑀬𑀡 (ayana ~ ayaṇa), from Sanskrit अयन (ayana, path, road).
