Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ǰʰantŕ̥ (“striker, slayer”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰén-tōr ~ *gʷʰn̥-tr-és (“striker, slayer”), from *gʷʰen- (“to slay, strike”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬘𐬀𐬧𐬙𐬀𐬭 (jaṇtar, “striker, smasher, smiter”), Old Persian 𐎩𐎫𐎼 (j-t-r /⁠jaⁿtar⁠/, “smiter, crusher”), Prasuni žütu (“leopard”). By surface analysis, हन् (han) +‎ -तृ (-tṛ).
