Borrowed from Classical Persian سیاه (siyāh), from Avestan 𐬯𐬌𐬌𐬁𐬎𐬎𐬀 (siiāuua), ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćyaHwás. Cognate with Sanskrit श्याव (śyāva), Russian сивый (sivyj, grey), Lithuanian šývas (light grey), Old English hīew (whence English hue).
