From Proto-Indo-Aryan *spáṭṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *spáćš, from Proto-Indo-European *spéḱs (spy; watcher, observer), from *speḱ- (to see). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬞𐬀𐬯 (spas, spy), Latin au-spex, haru-spex. Also related to English spy.
