Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *spáṭṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *spáćš, from Proto-Indo-European *spéḱs (“spy; watcher, observer”), from *speḱ- (“to see”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬞𐬀𐬯 (spas, “spy”), Latin au-spex, haru-spex. Also related to English spy.

     प्र वः॒ स्पळ् अ॑क्रन्त् सुवि॒ताय॑ दा॒वने ऽर्चा॑ दि॒वे प्र पृ॑थि॒व्या ऋ॒तं भ॑रे ।

     prá vaḥ spáḷ akrant suvitā́ya dāváné ʼrcā divé prá pṛthivyā́ ṛtáṃ bhare.

     Your spy has called to you to give prosperity. I sing to Heaven and Earth and offer worship.
