Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *spáṭṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *spáćš, from Proto-Indo-European *spéḱs (“spy; watcher, observer”), from *speḱ- (“to see”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬞𐬀𐬯 (spas, “spy”), Latin au-spex, haru-spex. Also related to English spy.
