Etymology
[edit]Mayrhofer derives the word from the root सु (su, “to press out, extract”), which ultimately derives from Proto-Indo-European *sewH- (“to pour, press out; moisture”).[1] Kroonen refines this derivation as from Proto-Indo-European *suH-ph₃-o-, from a compound of *sewH- (“to pour; moisture, rain, juice”) + *peh₃- (“to drink”);[2] This compound root was apparently presented in earlier literature with the form *sewb- (“to pour out”). Thus, related to English soup.
