From Proto-Indo-European *yuHs-ó-s (soup, broth). Cognate with Latin iūs (gravy, broth, sauce) (whence English juice), Lithuanian jū́šė (fish soup), Russian уха (uxa, fish soup), Proto-Germanic *justaz (cheese).
