First attested as Old Marathi 𑘭𑘰𑘤𑘜 (sābaṇa). Borrowed from Classical Persian صَابُون (sābūn), from Arabic صَابُون (ṣābūn).[1] Possibly influenced by Portuguese sabão, from the same source.[2] Doublet of साबू (sābū).
