[edit]Usually said to be from Latin sāpō, but borrowing from Galatian is also possible. Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *saipǭ (“soap”), from Proto-Indo-European *seyp-, *seyb- (“to pour, strain, trickle”). Cognate with Old English sāpe (“soap”). More at soap.
