Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀲𑀼𑀭 (sasura), from Sanskrit श्वशुर (śvaśura), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *swáśuras, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swáćuras, from Proto-Indo-European *swéḱuros. Cognate to Punjabi ਸਹੁਰਾ (sahurā), Assamese শহুৰ (xohur).
