Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sasás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sasás (“corn, herb, fruit, plant”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)h₁es- (“harvest, crop, fruit”), from the root *seh₁- (“to sow”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬵𐬌𐬌𐬀 (hahiia), Proto-Celtic *sasyos (“barley”), Latin sēmen (“seed”), English seed, sow. Related to सस्य (sasyá).
