Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *śraddádʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćradᶻdʰádʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱred-dʰédʰoh₁ti (“to place one's heart”, i.e. "to believing or trust"), compound phrase of the oblique case form of *ḱérd (“heart”) (whence also हृदय (hṛ́daya)) and *dʰédʰoh₁ti (“to place”) (whence also दधाति (dádhāti)). Cognate with Latin crēdō, Irish creid (“to believe”).[1]
