Uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *keh₃- and cognate with Ancient Greek κότος (kótos, anger), German Hader (strife), Irish cath (battle) (with unexpected a), Old Church Slavonic котора (kotora, quarrel) (with *ḱ > *k?).[1][2]
