From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wiHrúdʰ-, from *wi- (away, apart, about; in different directions) + Proto-Indo-European *h₁ludʰ-, zero grade of *h₁lewdʰ- (to grow), whence also रोधति (rodhati, grows).
