Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wiśpátiṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wićpátiš, from Proto-Indo-European *wiḱpótis.
Cognate with Lithuanian viẽšpats (“lord”), Avestan 𐬬𐬍𐬯𐬞𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (vīspaiti, “chief of a tribe”), Old Prussian waispattin (“mistress of a house”), probably Albanian zot (“lord, master”).
