Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘪𑘽𑘎𑘘 (vaṃkaṭa), 𑘪𑘰𑘎𑘘 (vākaṭa), 𑘪𑘰𑘽𑘎𑘳𑘚 (vāṃkuḍa), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀯𑀁𑀓𑀼𑀟 (vaṃkuḍa) (with Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-)), 𑀯𑀁𑀓𑀼𑀡 (vaṃkuṇa), from Sanskrit वङ्कु (vaṅkú). Cognate with Hindi बाँकुरा (bā̃kurā).
