Etymology

Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘩𑘪𑘜𑘹 (lavaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀡𑀫𑀇 (ṇamaï), 𑀡𑀯𑀇 (ṇavaï), from Sanskrit नमति (námati). Compare Gujarati નમવું (namvũ), Hindustani نَونَا (naunā) / नौना (naunā), Nepali नुहुनु (nuhunu), Odia ନଇଁବା (naĩbā), Sinhalese නමනවා (namanawā).
