Etymology
[edit]Turner connects the word to रोट् (roṭ, “to strike against”) and *रोञ्च् (roñc, “to crush, press in”) (which is not attested in Sanskrit but has descendants in Prakrit and modern Indo-Aryan, like रोंचणे (rõċṇẽ, “to force in, penetrate”)), and, along with Mayrhofer, leaves the origin of all three open.
