Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘦𑘹𑘮𑘳𑘜𑘲 (mehuṇī), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑁂𑀳𑀼𑀡𑀺𑀆 (mehuṇiā), from Sanskrit मिथुनका (mithunakā).
