Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hmáyźʰas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hmáyȷ́ʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃móyǵʰos, from *h₃meyǵʰ- (“to urinate”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬉𐬰𐬀 (maēza) and Old Armenian մէզ (mēz). Related to मेहति (méhati).
