Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *myázdʰas (“sacrificial oblation”), from Proto-Indo-European *meyh₁- + *dʰeh₁-.
The first component may be related to any of मेध (medha, “offering”), मयस् (mayas, “pleasure”), Hittite [Term?] (/miye-/, “to thrive, grow”). For the second component, compare धा (dhā, “to place, set down”).
Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬌𐬌𐬀𐬰𐬛𐬀 (miiazda), Middle Persian [script needed] (myzd /mēzd/), the latter whence Persian میز (miz, “table”) and Hindi मेज़ (mez, “table”).
