From Proto-Indo-Iranian *máyHas (pleasure, enjoyment), from Proto-Indo-European *meyh₁-es-, from Proto-Indo-European *meyh₁- (pleasure, pleasant). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬀𐬵 (maiiah, pleasure), Proto-Slavic *mìlъ (sweet), Lithuanian mielas (nice, sweet, cute), Latin mītis (mild, calm, pleasant), English mitigate.
