[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *meilas; from Proto-Indo-European *m(e)ilH-lo-s; from Proto-Indo-European *meyh₁-. Cognate with Lithuanian mielas (“nice, sweet, cute”), Latvian mīļš, mīls (“dear, cherished, beloved”) (dialectal), Old Prussian mijls (“dear”), Latin mitis (“mild, mellow”), Greek μείλιον (meílion, “pleasant gift”).
