Etymology 2
[edit]Of uncertain origin. Probably borrowed from substrate, supported by the phonetic variation of -ṇḍ- with -ṇṭ- in the word's descendants. Probably related to मठ (maṭha, “monastery”) and the second element of बोधिमण्ड (bodhi-maṇḍa, “framework of (spiritual) awakening”).
