Etymology

[edit]

A term of uncertain interpretation, an almost-hapax legomenon only attested twice in the Sanskrit corpus; once in the Chāndogya Upaniṣad, and once in the Bhāradvājagṛhyasūtra. If the original meaning is "locust", then it is likely a Wanderwort shared with Dravidian and Iranian languages; compare Kannada ಮಿಡಿಚೆ (miḍice) / ಮಿಡಿತೆ (miḍite, locust), as well as Persian ملخ (malax, grasshopper).
