Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰagás, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰh₂g-ó-s, from *bʰeh₂g- (to divide, distribute). Cognate with Avestan 𐬠𐬀𐬖𐬀 (baγa, god) Old Persian 𐎲𐎥 (baga, god). Compare also Proto-Slavic *bogъ, an Iranian borrowing. The Sanskrit root is भज् (bhaj).
