Etymology

A corruption of Classical Persian بَاطِنِی (bātinī), from Arabic بَاطِنِيّ (bāṭiniyy)[1]. The nasal changes from /n/ to /m/ and there is a semantic broadening from “interior” to “news”. False cognate of Sanskrit वार्त्ता (vārttā), Hindustani بات / बात (bāt), Gujarati વાત (vāt).
