Etymology

    Inherited from Sanskrit वातमण्डल (vātamaṇḍala, whirlwind) or वायुमण्डल (vāyumaṇḍala, whirlwind). In either case, the first part is from Proto-Indo-European *h₂weh₁- (to blow), thus a cognate with English wind.
