[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *priHtíš (“pleasurable sensation”), from Proto-Indo-European *préyH-ti-s ~ *priH-téy-s, from *preyH- (“to please”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬟𐬭𐬌𐬙𐬌 (friti, “prayer”), Sogdian [script needed] (brīti). By surface analysis, प्री (prī) + -ति (-ti).
