Etymology
[edit]From प्र- (pra-) + a lost noun *गामन् (*gāman), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gā́ma, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷéh₂-mn̥ ~ *gʷh₂-mén-s, from *gʷeh₂- (“to step”) (whence also जिगाति (jigāti)) + *-mn̥; this is equivalent to the root गा (gā) + -मन् (-man).
