[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑁄𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀬 (pŏtthaya, “book”) or 𑀧𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀬 (putthaya), from Sanskrit पवस्त (pavasta, “covering”) and Sanskrit पुस्तक (pustaka, “book”). The latter is a borrowing from some Middle Iranian language (see there). Both are ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pawástam (“covering, envelope”). Doublet of पुस्तक (pustak) and पोस्त (post).
